Never Stop Learning: Gerry Crispin on Global HR, AI, and Recruiting’s Future

CareerXroads CEO Gerry Crispin explores why continuous learning, global perspectives, and AI readiness define recruitment today.

Gerry Crispin, founder and CEO of CareerXroads, believes recruiting is fundamentally about continuous learning. Speaking at the Recruiting Innovation Summit, Crispin shared his unique perspective, honed through decades of experience and global travel, on how recruiters can stay relevant in an environment evolving faster than ever.

Global Perspectives Reshape Recruitment

Crispin emphasizes that recruiters benefit immensely by stepping outside their cultural comfort zones. He regularly leads delegations to countries like Israel, Vietnam, Cuba, and Japan to explore different approaches to HR, talent acquisition, and workforce management.

During these journeys, Crispin interacts with government officials, professors, recruiters, and students, collecting insights that challenge conventional recruiting wisdom. “Culture impacts everything we do," he explains. "You don’t fully appreciate that until you see recruitment practices through another country’s lens.”

For example, Crispin recounts how Eastern European countries face population declines impacting their workforce. Instead of embracing immigration, some governments incentivize citizens to have more children. Such strategies might seem unusual initially but provoke deeper reflection on similar domestic policies. “Travel forces you to question your assumptions about talent and management,” Crispin says.

AI and the Rapidly Evolving Talent Landscape

No conversation about recruiting today can avoid addressing artificial intelligence. Crispin acknowledges that many employers remain hesitant and are falling behind in AI adoption. In contrast, candidates, particularly younger generations, are becoming proficient with these new technologies.

“The candidates are far ahead of the organizations trying to hire them,” Crispin points out. He highlights his own grandchildren’s sophisticated use of AI tools, like ChatGPT, to enhance learning and improve classroom performance. “Recruiters need to catch up quickly because the people they're recruiting already have,” he emphasizes.

Crispin urges recruiters to actively embrace AI tools, insisting that individual experimentation is essential. “AI isn't going to replace recruiters, but recruiters who refuse to adapt will become irrelevant,” he warns.

Learning from the Next Generation

Crispin emphasizes recruiters should pay attention to Gen Z’s approach to technology, work, and learning. He notes that younger generations have already adopted AI to optimize their educational and career decisions, suggesting this will significantly influence recruiting strategies.

“Younger candidates are evolving rapidly,” Crispin says. “Recruiters need to understand these shifts and adapt their processes accordingly.” This includes recognizing that traditional recruitment expectations might no longer align with how Gen Z prefers to engage.

The Importance of Genuine Conversations

For Crispin, meaningful conversations remain foundational to successful recruiting. Building real relationships—beyond transactional interactions—helps recruiters better understand candidates’ true motivations and aspirations.

He advocates regularly reaching out to people with different perspectives, noting, “You have to stay connected to those who challenge your worldview. That’s how you truly learn and improve.”

Navigating Rapid Change

Acknowledging the anxiety caused by accelerating workplace changes, Crispin suggests recruiters proactively engage with uncertainty. He advises recruiters and talent leaders to foster conversations about managing change effectively, emphasizing that openness to learning is critical.

“Change is inevitable, and it’s accelerating,” Crispin notes. “Your ability to adapt and grow determines your success.”

Learning as a Daily Habit

Ultimately, Crispin champions continuous learning as the cornerstone of career longevity in recruitment. His commitment to lifelong learning – whether through global travel, deepening AI expertise, or engaging in thoughtful conversations, defines his professional philosophy.

“Every day should bring something new to learn,” Crispin emphasizes. “Recruiters who stay curious, adaptable, and open to change are the ones who remain successful.”
